Meditation Retreats
One of the things we emphasize most strongly is to regularly attend silent retreats, where we have the opportunity to really settle into all aspects of practice more deeply. One crucial element of a Zen silent retreat in southern California is that it creates an artificial environment—minimizing external distractions—so that we can look more deeply inward.
- Activities: Sesshins are silent retreats with a rigorous meditation schedule, including sitting and walking meditation, mindful movement practice, vegetarian food, a work period, meetings with teachers, and dharma talks.
- Schedule: We offer both 3- and 4-day retreats during the year. (see Retreat Calendar) The center offers simple dormitory-style sleeping on the floor with futons for out-of-town participants.
- Requirements: Applicants should have some previous meditation experience to attend a sesshin and must be physically able and willing to sit for multiple meditation periods each day.
- Cost: Costs are kept low to make retreats available to as many people as possible. A limited number of scholarships are also available. Applicants requiring financial assistance may request a scholarship or delayed payment at the time they apply.
